What Goes Around does not Come Around

As I contemplate life, I have thoughts about sayings and adages which are not truths but are more just conciliatory shadows of what we want to believe. For instance, ‘What goes around comes around’ is not a truth but a hope that if you do good, good will come to you and vice versa, if you do bad, the universe will repay you in kind. How many times have we seen a bully take advantage of many people and they remain on top to do it over and over. How many times have we seen a person struggle to make ends meet remaining in that cycle no matter what they do. Even if they achieved degrees from University, they remain at the bottom of the barrel. There is no solution as many have tried to right wrongs and were only sometimes successful. I present then, the observation that human nature will never change for the betterment of the whole of human beings.

Many years ago, philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau published an excellent book “The Social Contract”, which was an enviable task to have everyone agree to cooperate for equality amongst themselves in a society. The book goes on to explain how the people in a given society become their ‘brother’s keeper’, in a sense, that we give up some individual freedoms to maintain a government that will operate to protect and serve its people. If the people have evidenced that the government of the day has failed to protect and serve, the people of that society can and should change the government. Idealistically, this puts total sovereignty in the hands of the people, where I might add, it should always be.
